Constable Care

Over the past few week Constable Care has visited both Kindy groups. He came to teach us about road safety. We learned about ways to keep safe when coming to school either on foot, in the car or on a bike. The Kindies now all know to Stop, Look, Listen and Think before we cross the road and to always walk with a responsible adult that we know.

Book Week Bonanza...

Last week we celebrated book week and our love of books by dressing up as book characters. We also had a real life author, Elaine Forrestal, visit us. We have been reading some of her stories over the last few weeks during library time. Some of the titles we have read include Miss Llewellyn Jones and Miss Llewellyn Jones Goes to Town

Elaine spoke to us about what it was like to be an author and write stories and she assisted us in acting out some of her stories. The Kindy children also brought their favourite story to school and got to share it with the class. To finish off a fantastic week, a librarian came to visit and delivered us better beginnings book bags to take home. Happy reading!

A lovely time today.
This Term our Talk 4 Writing text is We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen.
To begin our learning journey we had a teddy bears' picnic. The children brought their teddies to school and we played games with them including teddy races, duck, duck, bear and teddy bear parachute rides. We also made some teddy toast, it was delicious.

The Farm Comes to Kindy!

We were lucky enough to have a visit from Old MacDonald Farms this week. The Kindy children loved getting to feed, groom and pet the farm animals. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to see the farm animals that we have been learning about. We even met the three little pigs!

Ladies Afternoon Tea

A big thank you to all of the Mums and Nanas who attended our Ladies' Afternoon. The Kindergarten children loved pampering their Mums by painting their nails, creating jewellery for them, painting their portrait and cooking together. We hope that all Mums had a wonderful weekend feeling extra loved and super spoilt!

Easter Fun...

The Kindergarten children were excited to show their unique Easter bonnets to their family and friends at our Easter Bonnet Parade last week.
They also loved showing their singing and dancing skills, and reciting the story of Rosie's Walk. This was followed by a surprise Easter egg hunt that the Easter Bunny left for the Kindy children in the nature play.

I think it is safe to say the Bonnet Parade went off a success and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it!
Well done Kindies :)

Hello Parents..

Hi Parents, and anyone reading our blog,

Sadly, Mrs Larsen's time in room 5 is up and she is off to have her baby (how exciting!) which means I will now be the full time teacher in the room.

I'm so excited for this year with all my beautiful Kindy kids and am looking forward to making many memories with them, and providing them lots of fun while developing a love for learning. We've had a fantastic start to Term 1 at Yanchep Beach with all Kindies adapting to school life and making lots of friends, and its been great getting to know them all so well- I can't wait to continue this throughout the year.

A lot of our class information was spoken about at the parent information session with Mrs Larsen, however if you feel you would like to know more or missed any, please feel free to chat with me anytime and I will be able to answer any of your questions.

Thank you to all the parents and children of Room 5 for allowing such a smooth transition of teachers in the class over these past few weeks, your cooperation doesn't go unnoticed and I am extremely thankful. I look forward to working with yourself and the Kindies this year in order to make it their best year at school!

Rosie's Walk Hook

This term our Talk for Writing text is Rosie's Walk by Pat Hutchins. One of our class focuses will be understanding and using positional language.
We had a special delivery from Rosie the Hen. She sent us an envelope that directed us to follow her clues to find a treasure! When we returned to the classroom there was a treasure chest filled with chocolate treats and pictures from the story. It was a very exciting morning!

Listening Walk

Letters and Sounds- A listening walk

We began our Letters and Sounds Program this week by creating listening ears and going on a listening walk around the school. We discovered the sounds we can hear in our environment and discussed the importance of listening. We heard cars, the wind rustling the leaves, people talking, leaves crunching underfoot, stomping, water trickling down the water fountains and birds singing in the trees. We are learning to tune into the sounds in our environment so that we can eventually hear the individual sounds in words. This will help us learn to read and write. Why not try going on a listening walk (or drive) on the way to school next week?

The Letters and Sounds Program is a whole school program that has 6 phases. In Kindergarten we will primarily be focussing on Phase 1 which gets the children to tune into sounds. Phase 1 comprises of 7 aspects.
Aspect 1 - General sound discrimination - environmental
The aim of this aspect is to raise children's awareness of the sounds around them and to develop their listening skills. Activities suggested in the guidance include going on a listening walk, drumming on different items outside and comparing the sounds, playing a sounds lotto game and making shakers.
Aspect 2 - General sound discrimination - instrumental sounds
This aspect aims to develop children's awareness of sounds made by various instruments and noise makers. Activities include comparing and matching sound makers, playing instruments alongside a story and making loud and quiet sounds.
Aspect 3 - General sound discrimination - body percussion
The aim of this aspect is to develop children's awareness of sounds and rhythms. Activities include singing songs and action rhymes, listening to music and developing a sounds vocabulary.
Aspect 4 - Rhythm and rhyme
This aspect aims to develop children's appreciation and experiences of rhythm and rhyme in speech. Activities include rhyming stories, rhyming bingo, clapping out the syllables in words and odd one out.
Aspect 5 - Alliteration
The focus is on initial sounds of words, with activities including I-Spy type games and matching objects which begin with the same sound.
Aspect 6 - Voice sounds
The aim is to distinguish between different vocal sounds and to begin oral blending and segmenting. Activities include Metal Mike, where children feed pictures of objects into a toy robot's mouth and the teacher sounds out the name of the object in a robot voice - /c/-/u/-/p/ cup, with the children joining in.
Aspect 7 - Oral blending and segmenting
In this aspect, the main aim is to develop oral blending and segmenting skills.
To practise oral blending, the teacher could say some sounds, such as /c/-/u/-/p/ and see whether the children can pick out a cup from a group of objects. For segmenting practise, the teacher could hold up an object such as a sock and ask the children which sounds they can hear in the word sock.
The activities introduced in Phase 1 are intended to continue throughout the following phases, as lots of practice is needed before children will become confident in their phonic knowledge and skills.
